Giving a national ambition an identity.

The Story

A new institution. A vision for Ethiopia's future.

The Ministry of Irrigation and Lowlands was established in 2021 to bring two national priorities under one roof: expanding irrigation, and developing Ethiopia's lowland and drought-prone areas.

A new ministry with a broad mandate needed to be recognized quickly and consistently, by government partners, communities and the public, in Amharic and in English.

Resolution Studio created the identity, its guidelines and the tools that carry it, from the logo and its animation to the website and the materials used every day.

A wide view across the Ethiopian highlands falling away to the lowlands under a clear sky.

The Identity

An identity shaped by water and land.

The mark brings together a drop of water and the contour of the lowlands, the two things the Ministry exists for. The guideline sets out how it was built, and how it should be used.

Guideline page: five steps showing how the drop is drawn on golden-ratio rectangles and spirals, ending in the finished coloured mark.

The golden ratio gives the drop a proportion that feels natural to the eye.

Contour lines describe altitude, from highlands to lowlands.

Six print colours, four digital gradients, two typefaces. Amharic always sits above English.

On colour, the logo turns white. On white, it keeps its full colour.

The altitude map

The mark holds Ethiopia's landscape, from highlands to lowlands. Each band of colour is a level of the land, from water to dry ground.

The Brand in Practice

One identity. Many expressions.

The white MiLLS flag on a flagpole against a clear sky.
A MiLLS silk scarf worn at the neck, printed with the symbol and the bilingual name.
The MiLLS scarf laid flat, in bands of teal, navy and lime.

Stationery

Letterhead envelopes, window envelopes and stickers carry the same flowing bands, so even the post is recognizable.

A MiLLS presentation folder in gold and white with drop-shaped photo windows, and a matching brochure.

The Digital Experience

A digital home for a national mandate.

The website brings the identity online: the brand waves frame every page, the drop becomes a window for photography, and the Ministry's leadership speaks directly to visitors, in English and Amharic.

Shown here are original page designs and the News section as built.

Our role

Resolution Studio designed the identity, its guideline, the logo animation and the brand applications, and designed and developed the website. The Ministry's programmes, projects and published content are its own.
